I love sports - football, basketball, volleyball, the Olympics, ice hockey, auto racing, etc and whatever - you name it I'll watch it.
I love athletes who overcome - who don't have a lot of physical ability but through talent and sheer strife work make it.
I love athletes who perform on the big stage and perform in the big moments.
I can't imagine the pressure or the thrill - the ultimate highs and lows.
That said, I don't believe an athlete owes me, a fan, diddly squat. I'm an adult, I choose how to spend my money, who or what to support. I don't remember an athlete personally speaking to me and saying "be my fan, I'll be loyal to XYZ forever". I'm not naive.
It's a multi-million dollar business and it's about results. The club pays the player. The player plays. The club gets something back - wins, titles, trophies, advertisers, jersey sales, etc. The player gets exposure, $, fame, etc. It's a quid pro quo relationship. It's not about me the fan, it's about business. I get that and for the most part I choose to ignore it and pretend its about me the fan but I know bottom line it's a business, for the club, for the player.
All I can do is enjoy my team and personal favorites for as long as I can. Any personal relationship I think I have with a player is a figment of my imagination.
I still like and support Mr Torres....for now.
