The Botev Plovdiv Football Club was founded in March 1912 by a group of youngsters. The exact date of foundation is not clear though the supporters claim to celebrate its birthday on the twelve day of the month. The club is named after the Bulgarian national hero Hristo Botyov Petkov. Coloured in yellow and black the club has another obscure back story. One states that choice was made as a symbol of unity between schoolboys-founders, Catholic Collegians (golden) and Orthodox Students (black), while other version presents a plain prosy - colours of Thrace - yellow as the sun, black as the land. However BPFC remains one of the most popular clubs in Bulgaria even has not earned a major success for the last three decades. The club flirted with flamboyant attitude but never
fulfilled its potential on the pitch. Botev Plovdiv has always enjoyed the patronage of
celebrity supporters because of its fashionable old glory. Many star players graced the team in the post-communist years
but nevertheless only gained a reputation as the
proverbial "nearly team"...
